During sieges, the food supply was a vital factor of victory or defeat for this Medieval town. To resist attacks even longer, the Sighisoareans made a several preparations. They build eight wells in the citadel, to ensure they were not drinking water poisoned by the enemy. The deepest well was more than 34 Meters deep.
It’s a remarkable achievement that all of this digging was made totally by hand. Unfortunately all of the wells are now filled. |
